The Adventures of Tintin Wii Edition

Let's get this out of the way.  I didn't enjoy the movie as much as I would have wanted to.  It was just a kiddie fun fluff movie with way too much action shoehorned into the story.  I didn't care for the much touted CG art either.  In one word: 'meh'.

In picking up the Wii game, I wasn't expecting much out of it.  After all, it was based on a pretty lame movie.  What piqued my interest however was how quickly the game's narrative was deviating from the film.  The main plot is intact, but much of the details have been altered making it Ubisoft's own version of Tintin's search for the Secret of the Unicorn.

The cutscenes are well done for a videogame, though contrivances and plot extenders made it into the game to provide action.  I find Ubisoft's work on the plot to be good, but barely better than the film's version.  It's hard to make sense of how they are able to stumble upon the plane they will use to travel.  And why on earth does Allan have in his command enemy planes every time Tintin takes for the skies?

At its core, Tintin is a very simple action game.  Much of it is in 2D platformer with a sprinkle of other experiences.  It's a nice effort, though it is evident early on that Ubisoft likes to pad their game with these mini games.  Even worse, because there is little variations in these mini games, it really is a drag.

That being said, I had fun playing the game and Tintin is another reason why I don't read game reviews.  Critics like to pounce on such a title because it isn't to their liking, but they fail to realize that their tastes don't necessarily represent the populace.  I don't think the game is perfect, but it's a good distraction.

And hey, Tintin finally admits he was after the treasure of the Secret of the Unicorn... which turns out to be Red Rackham's treasure!  Holy story compression, Batman!
